Holmes: National Merit Scholarship Finalist

Holmes moves to NM finalist
By Gina McCool

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has named Renee Holmes, an SHS senior, a finalist for one of their 6,000 1988 Merit Scholarships.

This places Holmes in a select group representing fewer than half of one percent of American high school seniors.

“I’m really excited and honored,” said Holmes. “The scholarship is really going to help me pay for my college education.”

There are rigorous requirements for becoming a finalist. Holmes became a semifinalist in 1986 by scoring highest on the PSAT. She took the SAT in November of 1987. She also submitted an essay about her school and community activities and personal interests and goals.

Holmes and other finalists are being considered for one of 1,800 $2,000 National Merit Scholarships.

The Merit Program is privately financed by grants from over 600 independent sponsors.

NMSC hopes to make the public more aware of the academic accomplishments of exceptional high school students.

The recipients of the Merit Scholarships will be notified in May.

  1. Great share! Learning, cramming and understanding the facts are different from one another in all aspects. First of all I just learnt the formulas to solve LSAT Sample Questions but later examples and explanations shared by online classes were quite helpful. High scores and grades made wonders in my results.
