By Andy Mayberry

The Sheridan Yellowjackets advanced to the second round of the class AAA state play-offs as they soundly defeated the Trumann Wildcats by a score of 33-12 on Friday, November 13.

After receiving the opening kickoff at their own eight yard line, Trumann was immediately forced to punt on fourth and four at the 14.

Sheridan received the ball at the 50 yard line and proceeded to drive the ball downfield. With 7:25 left in the first quarter, Gary Brown scored the game’s first touchdown from 14 yards out. Larry Campbell added the extra-point to give the Yellowjackets a 7-0 lead.

Just moments later, Kevin Spence scored on a 33 yard run to bring the Wildcats within a point. The point-after attempt failed, leaving the score 7-6 in favor of Sheridan.

On first and goal at the eight, Scott Herron added another Yellowjacket touchdown with 8:21 remaining in the second quarter. Campbell’s missed extra-point left Sheridan with a 13-6 advantage.

After receiving a Wildcat punt at their own 33 yard line, the Yellowjackets moved the ball to midfield. From there, David Damron galloped in for yet another first half score. Campbell’s extra-point gave Sheridan a 20-6 lead at halftime.

Trumann recovered a Sheridan fumble at the Wildcats’ 27 yard line to begin the second half but very quickly returned the favor with a fumble of their own at the 36 yard line.

Sheridan moved the ball down to the 12, where they faced third and eight when Brad LaRue hit Andy Crouse over the middle for a touchdown. Campbell missed the point-after, leaving the score 26-6 with 9:47 left in the third quarter.

With 10:41 remaining in the fourth quarter, Shawn Plouch caused Trumann’s quarterback, Bert Greenwell, to fumble the ball. Brand Moon picked it up and raced 20 yards to the end zone for the score. The extra-point by Campbell evidenced the lead to 33-6.

The Wildcats managed to close the gap somewhat when Shawn Blanchard scored from six yards out to make the score 33-12. A two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

Kerry Smith iced the Yellowjacket win as he intercepted a third down pass at the Sheridan 20 yard line with 1:51 left to play.

Sheridan finished with 361 yards of total offense while holding the Wildcats to 246 yards.

Damron led the Yellowjackets with 115 yards on 10 carries. Brown also added 109 yards on 14 carries.

Logan Dungan led Trumann with seven receptions for 124 yards.

Sheridan, ranked tenth overall and third in class AAA, improved to 11-0 for the season while the Wildcats end their year with a 5-5 record.

After the game, Coach Don Campbell said, “We played well. We blocked well, and the backs ran the ball well. The offensive line did a great job.”

The Yellowjackets will now travel to Haygood Stadium on the campus of Henderson State University to face the Arkadelphia Badgers, ranked first in both class AAA and first overall. Kickoff is at 7:30, Friday evening.
